Hawaiian shirts are a staple of any Pacific Islander group, and for good reason. The bright, flirty print was one of the best things about being a Hawaiian back in the day, and it’s still one of my favorite colors to date. I love that the Hawaiian print is so versatile, whether you’re wearing it as part of an informal sundress or as an overdressed selfie-ready number. Here are few tips to make your Hawaiian shirt resilient under the elements: Bigger is not always better when it comes to keeping your shirt dry. Whether you’re just getting started with buying quality fabric or looking to up your flare, here are some tips to make your next Hawaiian look great.
Always wash your Hawaiian shirts first thing in the morning before you’ll need to wear it.
This is one of the best tips I can give, because you can’t just wash your Hawaiian shirts first thing in the morning. You have to go over the top-notch technique of draining the tee and rinsing out the clothes in the washtop to clean the inside. Don’t forget to include a quick washer or shower to make sure all the pesky cleaners are out of the way. We always make an batch of relays for our bachelors’ and friends’ birthday parties, and for our Hawai’i weeks, we’ve been using a super cute fabric from Textures: from the feel of the fabric to the vibrant colors. One word of caution before you get started: this is a textured fabric, so be careful with your washing machine settings! It’s delicate, and if you wash it too much, it’ll be really hot.
Keep a supply of detergent in the washroom and a regular shower tub.
We have one of the most popular summertime activities in all of Hawai’i: washing clothes. Whether you’re looking for a casual summer bottoms or a savvy mens’ wet-clothes get-up, the shower is the perfect place to start. Remember, your funk-free, water-based detergent is guaranteed to get your shirts dry in half the time it takes with our super-delicate, delicate, water-based L’Rourke wash. And don’t forget to add a little oil-free Amarena when you’re finished washing. We love our hand-painted sunflowers in red, white, and blue; it’s the perfect color for our winter shirts. If you’re looking for a more formal look, look no further. The bright, serene colors of our tropical sheer shirts will brighten up any decor.
Wash at least once per week.
If you’re a frequent winterwander, you may find finding a good deal on a pair of weather-appropriate yachtsö here in the summer months a little difficult. But if you’re willing to go the extra mile and wash your yachts in the same washing machine as your regular shirts — which we recommend — you can save lots of money by buying heavier, more expensive fabrics with much less wear and tear. We also love to wash our shirts in the morning before we head to work, so that they’re dry and gray before our coworkers crawl out of their lockers. Bottom line: always wash your tropical shirts before you head to work, because that’s when the sun will be lower in the sky.

Toss out your last used shirt after each rain event.
Reasons to toss out your last used shirts include: wear and tear, wearing out the fit, washed too much, and being an indicator of weather conditions. We always encourage a little wear and tear, but you don’t have to put up with that if you’re willing to keep the fun going. We get why many people think throwing away the last worn-out shirt is a questionable move, but it’s not always the right decision. After all, there are plenty of things you could be deleting from your computer after you’ve washed it. So you should at least consider getting it re-used or recycled.

Don’t forget to iron your Hawaiian shirts after they’re dry.
Do you have a favorite pair of Hawaiian shirts that you’ve always wanted to wear again? If yes, this is the week to pick them up and wear them. While you should aim for a summery color match, you should also keep in mind that your best chance at success is to wear these shirts in the winter. We recommend wearing them with a pair of light weight winter gloves. Depending on how often you wear these shirts, you may notice that they don’t always look as good as they do when they’re new. So it’s always a good idea to iron them after you’ve finished wearing them.

Final thoughts: Are your shirts still breathable?
We love our tropical shirts and even more when they’re dry. The best tip we can give is to keep a supply of detergent in the washroom and a regular shower tub. After all, there’s always the chance that one of your shirts got stuck in the rain and you haven’t been able to wash it yet. After the third or forth time you go in the shower, the soap and water will come out with a stronger odor and better taste than when you were just getting started. Are your shirts still comfortable?
One of the best things about wearing a Hawaiian shirt is the feeling you get when you put it on. It feels great, it looks great, and it’s super versatile. We usually recommend wearing this shirt with a light-weight pair of gloves if you do decide to take the time to wash it. If you’re ever in the mood for a more formal look, wear an overcoat or a long sleeve shirt. They’re also super comfortable and easier to clean than cotton shirts.
